Advent Project – Day 8: Devoted Mary

When it comes down to the story of the immaculate conception, it's often easy to focus on what happened over how those involved dealt with their new situation.  When we look at Mary, we see a woman who was very devoted to God.  So much so that she barely even flinched when visited by an angel telling her that she was to bear the son of God.

What's easy to forget is exactly what this meant to how Mary would be perceived by those who were around her.  For one, she was not yet wed to Joseph, only promised to him.  Therefore, there was a chance that he could walk away from her, and likely no other man would take her into his home due to the perception of her infidelity.  Expounding on that, she would likely be viewed very negatively by those around her in this ancient society.  All in all, Mary had a lot to lose, yet she remained faithful to God.

It's a great testament to how to treat the unexpected.  If you know that it is truly from God, follow it regardless of how everyone else perceives you.  After all, our salvation is not a popularity contest.
